Pre-production & colour trial models

Pre-production & colour trial models

Here are a few very special treats: pre-production models, these are models which were made before the actual start of production for testing purposes. For example testing the fit of the parts and/or base or the different colour combinations of bodywork and interior. These models are extremely rare, there were made in very small quantities only (some are real unique pieces!) and should actualy not have left the factory. Frequently, such "pre-pro's" were exhibited at trade fairs and toyshows to make new models known to the trade and the public and from time to time such a model made it into collectors hands so we can still admire them today. Of course i do guarantee the authenticity of each and any model i offer here!

Empty boxes

Empty boxes

Here you find the available empty original boxes for the Regular Wheel series.

The most important first: all boxes offered here are genuine, original boxes for Regular Wheel models. All my boxes are guaranteed to be original, Lesney made boxes. No photocopies, "replicas" or other illegally produced fakes.

Roadways, Accessories & spare Parts

This category is for the Roadways, Accessories and spare parts.

The Roadways were large cardboards printed in color showing various themes, these were offered by Lesney to enhance the play value of the standard 1-75 series models. They were spread on the floor and then you could play with your cars on a highway, in central London, on a construction site or a farm. Since the roadways were made of thin cardboard these usually did not last long. Also in this category you will find old accessories for RW models and spare parts. Note: Of course, all offered small parts are old originals! I don't offer any fake "replica" stuff.

1-75 Regular Wheel Displays

Here you find a selection of original shopdisplays for the 1-75 series.

Displays, the culmination of many collections. Nothing beats an old, original display to showcase your own collection! Displays or sales aids were offered early on by Lesney, often completely free of charge to dealers. Therein also lies the reason for the rarity of the old displays today, they were not exactly designed for durability and back then got easily replaced if necessary with a new version. Europe (by Lesney) and the USA (Bronner Corporation) had completely different styles, both regions had their own design. In the U.S. the displays were made to unfold in the middle while in Europe a step-like "staircase design" was developed. With few exceptions, the early displays were made of cardboard ( sometimes supported by a wooden frame ), plastic displays were made from about 1966 onwards. Completely unused, "as new" displays are great rarities today, as well as all the displays made before 1959 with less than 75 models listed on them!

1-75 Regular Wheel Boxtypes

Here you find a list of Boxtypen used in my listings for the 1-75 Regular Wheel Series as well as the Major Pack- and Accessory Series.

I use the same basic types for the boxes for all "Matchbox" series' made in the Lesney era, therefore a "D" box for example ( the first style showing the model in full colour on a yellow background without a background scene ) is designated as "D" in the 1-75, Major Pack, King Size or even Yesteryear range. These types are also used for all other box artwork like Giftsets.

I always found it unnecessary to use different boxtypes for the various Matchbox lines produced by Lesney as the company developed the box artwork uniformly for all their products. Therefore a "A" box can only be found in the 1-75 series as all other ranges were started after the later boxtypes were introduced already.

All early boxes are printed in (dark) blue, yellow, black and red only. One underside was printed in full in yellow, red and blue creating an "striker" colour as found an genuine Matchbox boxes.
